UN Security Council Extends Taliban Sanctions Monitoring Team Mandate Amid Regional Security Worries

The team is responsible for overseeing sanctions imposed on the Taliban and associated individuals, groups, and entities—including travel bans, asset freezes, and arms embargoes—as part of efforts to maintain peace and security in Afghanistan and the wider region.

Pakistan, which backed the resolution, highlighted ongoing threats from militant groups such as Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), ISIL-Khorasan, the Baloch Liberation Army, and Al-Qaeda, saying they have used Afghan territory to plan attacks, including recent deadly incidents.

Pakistan’s ambassador to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, urged the Taliban to prevent Afghan soil from being used for terrorism and called for meaningful steps toward peace and prosperity rather than isolation.

The renewal underscores continued global focus on preventing Afghanistan from becoming a security threat to neighbouring states and beyond.
