India has reportedly reduced its oil imports from Russia by 50 percent following intense pressure and heavy tariffs imposed by the United States.
According to White House officials quoted by the British news agency Reuters, trade discussions between the US and India have been “constructive and productive,” leading to a significant cut in Russian oil purchases by Indian refineries.
Officials said that India’s decision reflects progress in ongoing US-India talks aimed at aligning trade and energy policies. However, they declined to comment on whether India plans to completely halt its oil imports from Russia in the near future.
It is worth noting that former US President Donald Trump recently told reporters in the Oval Office that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured him that India would stop buying oil from Russia. Trump said he was unhappy with India’s earlier oil purchases but claimed that “the issue has now been resolved.”
On the other hand, India’s Ministry of External Affairs denied any recent discussion between Modi and Trump regarding Russian oil imports, clarifying that no such assurances were given.
