A deadly explosion at a busy hotel bar in the Crans-Montana ski resort in southwestern Switzerland has claimed the lives of at least 40 people, Swiss police said early Thursday. The blast happened around 1:30 a.m. local time as revellers marked the New Year’s party, causing panic and chaos at the popular winter destination.

Swiss authorities confirmed that nearly 100 people were injured, many in serious condition, and several foreign visitors are among the victims. Emergency services rushed to the scene to assist the wounded and control the situation.
