Bollywood megastar Salman Khan once reportedly offered to buy the iconic bungalow “Aashirwad” of late superstar Rajesh Khanna—without charging him a fee—during the veteran actor’s financially difficult days. According to media reports, Rajesh Khanna, one of India’s earliest superstars, faced severe financial difficulties in the late 1960s and 1970s, struggling to maintain his famed Carter Road sea-facing bungalow.

Salman Khan’s gesture was intended to help stabilise Khanna’s finances, with assurances that he would also take care of his income tax liabilities and offer him roles in movies without payment, sources say. However, Rajesh Khanna reportedly misinterpreted the offer, believing Salman wanted to weaken his social and financial standing. Eventually, Khanna never sold the property, lived alone, and passed away; the Aashirwad bungalow was later sold and demolished to make way for a high-rise.
The story highlights a dramatic chapter in Bollywood history, where goodwill, fame, and misunderstandings intersected.
