Pakistan’s PM Shehbaz Joins World Leaders at SCO Summit in Tianjin

On August 30, 2025, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif touched down in Tianjin, China, to attend the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of State Summit, a landmark gathering of over 20 global leaders. Welcomed by senior Chinese officials, including Minister Sun Meijun and Tianjin’s Yu Yunlin, Shehbaz’s visit also coincides with the 80th anniversary of China’s victory in the People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

This dual-purpose trip, running until September 4, aims to strengthen Pakistan’s strategic ties with China while advancing regional cooperation through the SCO’s platform.

The SCO Summit, held from August 31 to September 2, themed “Upholding the Shanghai Spirit: SCO on the Move,” brings together leaders like Russia’s Vladimir Putin and India’s Narendra Modi to discuss security, trade, and cultural cooperation. Shehbaz will engage in bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang to deepen the “All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership,” focusing on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Phase II, which prioritizes industrial and agricultural advancements.

Additionally, he will address the Pakistan-China B2B Investment Conference to boost trade and investment, reinforcing economic ties with Chinese business leaders.

Beyond the summit, Shehbaz will join Xi Jinping and other global leaders in Beijing on September 3 for a grand military parade marking the 80th anniversary of China’s victory in the Anti-Fascist War. This historic commemoration highlights China’s role in defeating Japanese aggression during World War II, showcasing advanced military equipment like hypersonic missiles.
