The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of Pakistan issued a critical landslide alert on July 22, 2025, warning of heightened risks in the northern regions of Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to ongoing heavy monsoon rains.
The alert, issued by the NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), identifies specific areas at risk, including Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Astore, Diamer, and Ghanche in Gilgit-Baltistan; Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Haveli, Bagh, and Poonch in AJK; and Chitral, Dir, and Kohistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The warning comes in response to meteorological forecasts predicting isolated to widespread heavy rainfall, which could trigger landslides, mudslides, rockfalls, and ground subsidence in these vulnerable mountainous zones.
The NDMA has highlighted high-risk points along key routes, such as Kolai Palas (road 180), Lower Kohistan (road 200), Upper Kohistan (road 240), Tatta Pani (road 360), Jaglot (road 480), Nagar (road 460–480), Hunza (road 520–540), and the Jaglot-Skardu Road.
The authority has also urged Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs), rescue services, local administrations, armed forces, and humanitarian organizations to ensure the readiness of response personnel, machinery, and emergency equipment.
