Lieutenant General Aamer Raza has been promoted to the rank of four-star general and appointed as Pakistan’s first Commander of the National Strategic Command (CNSC), marking a significant development in the country’s military command structure. The appointment was announced by the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated General Aamer Raza on his promotion and wished him success in carrying out what the government described as a critical national responsibility. Before his promotion, Aamer Raza was serving as the Chief of General Staff (CGS), one of the Pakistan Army’s most senior operational positions.

The position of Commander of the National Strategic Command was created under the 27th Constitutional Amendment introduced last year. Under the revised framework, the office assumes responsibility for overseeing Pakistan’s strategic command functions, a role previously associated with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), whose office was abolished as part of the constitutional reforms.

The constitutional changes also restructured Pakistan’s military chain of command by creating the new office of the Commander of the National Strategic Command and redefining senior military appointments. Officials say the reforms are intended to streamline strategic decision-making and strengthen the country’s defence command system.

General Aamer Raza’s appointment marks the first time the newly established post has been filled since the reforms came into effect.
