KATHMANDU: Massive flash floods struck northern Nepal near the China border on Wednesday, killing at least eight people and leaving 384 travellers reported missing as authorities launched large-scale search and rescue operations.

The flooding hit the Rasuwa district, with powerful torrents and mudslides sweeping through roads, homes and other infrastructure. Nepal’s Tourism Board said 384 tourists and travellers had been reported missing from the affected areas, including 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali citizens.

The missing travellers include nationals from India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Australia, South Africa and the Netherlands. Many were travelling through the region towards the Rasuwagadhi border crossing, a route used by tourists and pilgrims heading towards Tibet and Mount Kailash.

On the Chinese side of the border, a major mudslide struck near Gyirong Port in Tibet, causing what Chinese state media described as major casualties. Roads leading to the trade hub were cut off, while communications and electricity supplies were disrupted.

Nepalese authorities have deployed security personnel, helicopters, and emergency teams to search for survivors. Rescue operations have been complicated by damaged roads and dangerous conditions.

Authorities are still investigating the precise cause of the disaster, while officials have warned communities downstream to remain alert. The scale of destruction is still being assessed as rescue teams continue searching for missing people.
