US Treasury Chief Warns of ‘Economic D-Day’ Against Iran

WASHINGTON: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned that Washington is entering an “economic D-Day” against Iran, signalling a major escalation in the Trump administration’s campaign to isolate Tehran financially.

In a statement, Bessent said the United States was entering the “endgame” of its pressure campaign and would use every available economic tool to cut off financial channels supporting the Iranian government. He described the planned measures as potentially the “single greatest financial offensive” ever launched against an adversary.

Bessent said Washington’s objective was to sever what he called Iran’s economic lifelines and prevent the country from accessing revenue and international financial support. He also warned governments and other entities that cooperate with Tehran that they could face consequences from the United States.

The announcement comes as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain extremely high, with the conflict entering its sixth month. The United States is preparing additional sanctions and secondary measures targeting countries and businesses that continue to maintain economic ties with Iran.

Iran, however, has rejected the latest US pressure campaign. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran would use its available capabilities to respond to American economic measures and warned that countries cooperating with Washington could face consequences.

The escalating confrontation is also threatening global energy markets, particularly because of uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for international oil shipments.
