The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has successfully received and is handling one of the world’s largest container ships, marking a significant achievement for Pakistan’s maritime and logistics sector. The ultra-large container vessel, MSC Erica, arrived at South Asia Pakistan Terminals Limited (SAPTL) on July 12, highlighting the port’s growing capability to accommodate some of the biggest ships operating in global trade.

Measuring 398.5 metres in length and 59 metres in width, MSC Erica has a carrying capacity of 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a gross tonnage of 194,308 tonnes, and a draught of 12 metres. During its stay at Karachi Port, the vessel is expected to handle more than 3,000 containers, demonstrating the efficiency and operational readiness of the country’s largest seaport.
The arrival of the mega-vessel underscores Pakistan’s improving port infrastructure and its ability to support high-volume international shipping. Maritime experts believe handling ultra-large container ships will strengthen Pakistan’s position as a regional trade and logistics hub while boosting confidence among global shipping companies.
Officials say the successful handling of MSC Erica reflects ongoing investments in port facilities and modern cargo-handling equipment. As international trade volumes continue to grow, Karachi Port is expected to play an increasingly important role in facilitating imports, exports, and regional connectivity, further contributing to Pakistan’s economic development.
