The debate over the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology has intensified during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with social media users alleging that defending champions Argentina have received favorable decisions. However, newly released VAR statistics present a more balanced picture while confirming that Argentina has indeed benefited from the technology more than most teams.

According to data compiled by an international news agency, Argentina ranked second among all teams in receiving positive VAR interventions from the group stage through the Round of 16. The team recorded 6.7 favorable VAR decisions per 100 fouls, while no VAR rulings were made against them during that period. Mexico topped the list with a rate of 7.8 favorable interventions, followed by Portugal, New Zealand, and Saudi Arabia.
The statistics have reignited discussions after several controversial moments involving Argentina, including the disallowed Egyptian goal in the Round of 16 and a challenge involving Lionel Messi that some fans believed warranted a red card. Another disputed VAR decision in the quarter-final against Switzerland further fueled online speculation.
On the other hand, Croatia emerged as the team most adversely affected by VAR decisions, followed by Iran, Qatar, Germany, and England. FIFA maintains that all VAR decisions are made impartially, while the report concludes that, although Argentina has benefited significantly, the available data does not prove the tournament has been manipulated or predetermined.
