ATC Acquits Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Sentences PTI Leaders to Decade in Jail

On July 22, 2025, an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore delivered a mixed verdict in a case related to the May 9, 2023, riots, acquitting Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi and others while sentencing senior PTI leaders to 10 years in prison.

Judge Arshad Javed announced the decision, which pertains to the violent protests that erupted after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, involving attacks on civilian and military installations, including the Shadman police station.

Qureshi, along with Hamza Azim, Afzal Azim, Ali Hassan, Riaz Hussain, and Khalid Qayyum, was acquitted, with the court finding insufficient evidence to convict them. However, PTI leaders Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, Umar Sarfraz Cheema, and Senator Ejaz Chaudhry were each sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for their alleged roles in the arson and vandalism during the riots.

The trial, conducted under strict security at Kot Lakhpat Jail, has been a focal point of contention, with PTI leaders denouncing the charges as politically motivated.
