In the next 12 to 48 hours, northeastern Punjab, Pakistan, braces for heavy rainfall, raising concerns about potential flooding in key districts like Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Chiniot, Faisalabad, and Sargodha. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have issued urgent alerts, warning residents to stay vigilant as torrential downpours could exacerbate the region’s ongoing flood crisis.
According to recent updates, a monsoon low over southwest Haryana and a strong westerly wave are driving widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall across northeastern Punjab. Specifically, the PMD forecasts intense showers in Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, and surrounding areas from September 2 to September 3, 2025.
Additionally, districts like Gujranwala, Gujrat, and Faisalabad face risks of urban flooding and flash floods in local nullahs and streams. The NDMA has highlighted the potential for high river flows at Marala Headworks, which could inundate low-lying areas in Gujrat and nearby regions.
Moreover, the ongoing flood situation in Punjab remains critical. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reports that 41 people have died, and over 2.4 million have been affected by floods since last week.
In response, authorities have evacuated 750,000 people from vulnerable areas, including villages along the Chenab and Sutlej rivers. Consequently, the government has mobilized Rescue 1122, the Pakistan Army, and local administrations to provide relief, including food, clean water, and medical supplies.
