Trump Hits Back at Canada as Trade War Escalates After Retaliatory Tariffs

US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised Canada after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced retaliatory tariffs on American goods following the collapse of trade negotiations between the two countries.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump accused Canada of seeking the benefits of being part of the United States without actually becoming a state. He also criticised Canadian tariffs on American agricultural products, saying the US would no longer tolerate what he described as unfair trade practices.

The latest confrontation follows the breakdown of negotiations between Washington and Ottawa. The United States has imposed 50 per cent tariffs on around $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, further escalating tensions between the two longtime trading partners.

Canada has responded by announcing dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs on selected US products, scheduled to begin on September 8. The Canadian government has said it is prepared to protect domestic businesses and workers affected by the escalating dispute.

The tariffs cover a range of goods, including agricultural products, dairy items, alcohol, electronics, appliances, and sporting equipment. Some major sectors, including energy and fish, remain exempt from the latest US measures.

The dispute has raised fresh concerns about the future of economic relations between the neighbouring countries. It could put additional pressure on businesses and consumers on both sides of the border.
