Pakistani actress Hania Aamir has been named UN Women Pakistan’s National Goodwill Ambassador.
Hania Amir, in her post, called it “more than just a title.” She is among the most followed Pakistani celebrities, with 19 million followers on Instagram.
She has entered a prestigious list of goodwill ambassadors, with three others holding the title from South Asia: Indian actor Farhan Akhtar, Pakistani activist Muniba Mazari, and Indian tennis player Sania Mirza. Internationally, goodwill ambassadors for UN Women include Emma Watson, Nicole Kidman, and Anne Hathaway.
In their post, UN Women’s Pakistan office said Aamir will “use her platform to raise awareness, inspire action, and amplify the voices of women and girls across Pakistan.” Together with the actor, the organisation hopes to work towards a future where “every woman and girl can realise her full potential—free from violence, discrimination, and inequality.”
After Mazari, who was appointed in 2015, Aamir is the second Pakistani to be given the ambassador title by UN Women. National ambassadors for other United Nations (UN) agencies in Pakistan include Shehzad Roy for the UN Office on Drugs, Fawad Khan for the UN Development Programme, Saba Qamar for the UN agency for children, and Mahira Khan for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and Crime. Aamir, being a popular media person, not just in Pakistan but in other South Asian countries, brings a strong digital presence to UN Women’s portfolio. She is loved by Bangladeshis and has Indian fans as well. Her platform can engage young girls in Pakistan and will be an effective tool in spreading awareness.
