Trump Threatens Canada With 100% Tariffs if Ottawa Signs Trade Deal With China

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned Canada that he would impose a sweeping 100 percent tariff on all Canadian imports if Ottawa proceeds with a trade agreement with China, escalating tensions between the two longtime allies. In a post on his social platform Truth Social, Trump told Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that allowing Canadian goods to serve as a “drop-off port” for Chinese products would be met with “an immediate 100% tariff” on all Canadian goods entering the United States. Trump added that China would “eat Canada alive,” devouring its businesses, social fabric, and way of life if the deal goes ahead.

Carney recently visited Beijing and described China as a “reliable and predictable partner,” drawing criticism from the U.S. leader. The threat of punitive tariffs—unheard of between close trading partners—could undermine Canada–U.S. economic ties and disrupt sectors like autos, machinery, and agricultural products if enacted.
