The summary for elevating Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir to the new post of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) has been forwarded to the presidency for final approval, the PM’s Office confirmed.

Under the changes, Munir—already serving as Chief of Army Staff (COAS)—is set to hold the unified title CDF-cum-COAS for a five-year term from the date of official notification.
The reforms, passed by the National Assembly and receiving Presidential assent in mid-November, dissolve the post of Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), and restructure Pakistan’s top military command under the new CDF system.
Once approved, Munir’s tenure will reset under the amended laws governing the Army, Navy, and Air Force—granting him consolidated command over all branches and a renewed five-year mandate.
Officials say the move aims to streamline defence leadership and enhance coordination among the military services under a single command structure.
