On July 29, 2025, the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) convened its 15th Board Meeting, chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, to review and advance urban transport initiatives in Karachi.
The meeting, held at the Sindh Secretariat, focused on increasing the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) daily ridership from its current 72,000 passengers to an ambitious 150,000.
Strategies to Enhance Ridership
Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who oversees Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, highlighted the success of recent operational improvements.
“The Sindh government’s effective measures have led to a consistent increase in Green Line ridership,” he said, attributing the growth to streamlined operations and public trust.
The SMTA Board approved comprehensive strategies to further boost ridership, including enhanced service frequency, better integration with other transport systems, and improved passenger facilities.
The integration of the Green Line with the Orange Line, completed in May 2024, has significantly eased commuting for Karachi residents.
The Board Office Station now serves as an interchange, allowing seamless transfers via a pedestrian bridge, which has driven up passenger numbers.
Memon noted, “This integration offers greater convenience and improves daily commutes, making public transport more appealing.”
Development Plans
The SMTA Board greenlit the Annual Development Program (ADP) for 2025–26, prioritizing the timely completion of ongoing urban transport projects.
To ensure financial sustainability, the Board approved hiring a non-fare revenue firm to manage properties linked to the Green and Orange Line BRTs.
This move aims to generate income through advertising, commercial leasing, and other innovative revenue streams, reducing reliance on government subsidies.
Memon emphasized the government’s commitment to modern, eco-friendly transport.
“We aim to make these projects financially self-sustaining while providing high-quality, environmentally friendly travel options,” he said.
The Sindh government plans to leverage technology and routine maintenance to enhance service reliability and passenger experience.
The SMTA, led by Managing Director Kamal Dayo, briefed attendees on ongoing projects, including the Yellow and Red Line BRTs, which are in development to further expand Karachi’s transit network.
Memon reiterated the government’s goal to revolutionize urban transport. “We are committed to providing safe, reliable, and affordable travel facilities,” he said, highlighting plans to integrate BRT lines with other public transport systems, such as the People’s Bus Service and the upcoming Karachi Circular Railway.
The meeting, attended by Mayor Sukkur Arsalan Islam Sheikh, Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, and other senior officials, underscored a unified push for transformative transport solutions.
