Sindh Braces for Severe Rainfall: NDMA Warns of Flooding in Karachi, Hyderabad

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of Pakistan has sounded the alarm for severe rainfall and potential flooding across multiple districts in Sindh, including Karachi, Hyderabad, and other coastal and low-lying areas. The warning, issued on August 19, 2025, highlights a powerful weather system expected to bring intense rain over the next 12 to 24 hours, with effects lingering for two to three days. This could trigger urban flooding and disrupt daily life in several regions.

The NDMA has pinpointed Karachi, Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Tharparkar, Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Dadu, Khairpur, Sukkur, Ghotki, Larkana, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, and Kashmore as vulnerable areas. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts heavy rainfall, raising concerns about waterlogging in urban centers like Karachi and Hyderabad, where drainage systems often struggle to cope. Coastal and low-lying areas face a heightened risk of flash floods, which could damage infrastructure and disrupt transportation.

The NDMA urges residents to take immediate precautions. People should avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding, steer clear of electric poles and downed power lines, and ensure proper drainage around homes. The authority also recommends downloading the Pakistan NDMA Disaster Alert App for real-time updates. Local authorities are working with the NDMA to monitor water levels and clear drainage systems, while emergency response teams, including Rescue 1122, stand ready to assist.
