“Silence Not an Option”: Canadian Sikh Activist Defiant After Fresh Threats

Canadian Sikh activist Moninder Singh has said that “silence is not an option” after receiving fresh threats against himself and his family, reaffirming his commitment to continue speaking out despite growing risks.

Singh, chairman of the Sikh Federation of Canada, revealed that he was recently informed of assassination threats, adding to fears within the Sikh activist community following the 2023 killing of a fellow activist in Canada. Despite the warnings, he stressed that intimidation would not deter him or others from advocating for their cause.

The threats come amid heightened tensions surrounding Sikh activism abroad, particularly linked to advocacy for an independent Sikh homeland. Singh emphasised that giving in to fear would only embolden those attempting to silence dissent, insisting that activists must continue to raise their voices.

He also highlighted concerns about the safety of his family, noting that such threats extend beyond individuals to affect entire communities. The situation reflects broader anxieties among Sikh activists who say they face increasing risks despite living in democratic countries.

Singh’s remarks underscore a wider debate on freedom of expression, security, and the protection of activists, as calls grow for stronger action against transnational intimidation and political violence.
