The Sindh government has abolished charged parking across all roads in Karachi, effective July 25, 2025. Mayor Murtaza Wahab proposed the move, and Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah approved it, aiming to curb illegal parking fees and enhance urban mobility in Pakistan’s largest city.
The Sindh Local Government Department issued a notification directing all municipal councils, including the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and municipal commissioners of Karachi’s 25 towns, to halt charged parking on public roads. The order limits parking fees to designated plazas, private plots, or council-approved areas, banning collections on city streets.
This decision follows years of public outcry and legal challenges regarding the exploitative practices of parking mafias, which often charged high fees without legal backing. The Sindh government has also instructed authorities to take strict action against violators, with orders to register FIRs against those found collecting illegal parking fees.
