Pakistan in Diplomatic Overdrive Ahead of Crucial Iran-US Talks

Pakistan has launched an intense diplomatic push ahead of a potential second and decisive round of talks between the United States and Iran, positioning itself as a key mediator in the ongoing crisis. The country’s civilian and military leadership have stepped up engagements across major regional capitals to build momentum for a possible agreement.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Saudi Arabia, where he held discussions with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on regional stability, while Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir travelled to Tehran for high-level talks with the Iranian leadership. These parallel efforts reflect a coordinated strategy to align regional stakeholders ahead of negotiations.

Officials say Pakistan has been facilitating backchannel communication between Washington and Tehran, helping exchange messages and reduce mistrust following earlier talks in Islamabad that ended without agreement. The United States has also acknowledged Pakistan’s central role and expressed optimism that future negotiations might take place in Islamabad.

The diplomatic surge follows Pakistan’s role in brokering a temporary ceasefire, with Islamabad now aiming to convert it into a structured peace process. Analysts note that while challenges remain, Pakistan’s growing involvement highlights its rising influence in shaping regional diplomacy.
