Thousands of supporters of India’s youth-led “Cockroach Movement” gathered in New Delhi on Monday for a planned march to Parliament, defying police restrictions and triggering clashes with security forces.

Authorities had denied permission for the march, citing security concerns as Parliament’s monsoon session began. However, large crowds assembled at Jantar Mantar, where protesters attempted to move toward Parliament before police intervened. Television footage showed officers using batons to disperse demonstrators, although police maintained that only necessary measures were taken to prevent unrest.

The movement has rapidly evolved into one of the most significant public challenges facing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government during its current term. Initially driven by outrage over repeated examination paper leaks and alleged failures in India’s education system, the campaign has gained millions of supporters, particularly among students and young job seekers.

Tensions escalated after activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike in support of the movement, was taken to the hospital by authorities over the weekend. Protest leaders say they are demanding accountability for examination irregularities, comprehensive education reforms, and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Despite the confrontation, organizers have indicated they remain open to dialogue with the government while continuing to press for action on their demands.
