OpenAI has signed a deal with Australian data center operator NEXTDC to build a massive AI campus and GPU “supercluster” in western Sydney, a project valued at approximately US $4.6 billion (≈ A$7 billion).

The planned facility at NEXTDC’s S7 site in Eastern Creek will host a hyperscale AI infrastructure aimed at supporting large AI workloads and promises to deliver thousands of jobs, from construction to long-term technical, engineering, and operations roles.
The new AI centre is central to the “OpenAI for Australia” initiative, a strategic push to expand local AI capacity, boost talent development, and anchor sensitive data processing within the country, supporting adoption by governments, businesses, and research institutes.
Officials estimate the project will significantly accelerate Australia’s AI ecosystem, helping the country emerge as a regional leader in advanced computing, AI infrastructure, and innovation.
