Karachi court sentences cleric to two 15-year terms for abusing madrassah students

A Karachi court has sentenced a religious cleric to two separate 15-year prison terms after finding him guilty of sexually abusing two madrassah students in the city’s Orangi Town area. The verdict was issued by an additional district and sessions court after completion of the trial.

According to court officials, the convict was charged with repeatedly assaulting two minor students enrolled at a local seminary. The abuse reportedly came to light after the victims informed their families, leading to a police investigation and the eventual arrest of the accused.

The court ruled that the prosecution had provided sufficient evidence and witness testimony to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. In addition to the prison sentences, the convict was also fined, with further jail time to be served if the penalty is not paid.

The case has once again highlighted concerns about child safety and accountability within educational and religious institutions. Rights advocates have called for stronger monitoring systems, protection mechanisms, and swift legal action in abuse cases involving minors.

Authorities said the convicted cleric will remain in custody to serve the sentence, while officials stressed the importance of encouraging victims to report abuse without fear.
