On September 3, 2025, the Indian High Commission issued a formal warning to Pakistan about potential flooding in the Sutlej and Tawi rivers, as confirmed by Pakistani officials. The alert highlights high flood levels at Harike Barrage (downstream) and Ferozepur (downstream) on the Sutlej, as well as in the Tawi River at Jammu. Consequently, Pakistan’s Ministry of Water Resources promptly issued a flood alert to address the looming threat.
The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has forecast heavy rainfall across the province until September 5, 2025. This weather pattern, combined with rising river levels, could worsen flooding in vulnerable areas. For instance, low-lying settlements and agricultural lands near the Sutlej face significant risks. As a result, Pakistani authorities have ramped up monitoring efforts and deployed rescue teams to stay on high alert.
Although India’s alert focused on the Sutlej and Tawi, recent reports indicate the Chenab River has also experienced high water flows due to heavy monsoon rains and upstream dam releases in India.
Meanwhile, the PDMA urges residents to avoid rivers and prepare emergency kits. Thus, coordinated efforts are underway to mitigate potential damage and protect communities in Punjab.
