On July 26, 2025, a fishing boat carrying six fishermen from Karachi capsized near the coast of Gwadar, Balochistan, resulting in a heartbreaking tragedy.
The incident claimed the lives of five fishermen, including a father and son. Initially, only one body was recovered, with four deemed missing, but on Sunday authorities retrieved four more bodies.
The boat set out from Karachi’s Ibrahim Hyderi, Ali Akbar Shah Goth, and Machhar Colony neighborhoods and sank under unclear circumstances, prompting immediate search and rescue operations by local authorities and maritime agencies.
The deceased include Ayub from Ibrahim Hyderi, who was found on 26 July 2025. By July 27, four additional bodies were retrieved, including Ayub’s son Zeeshan, bringing the total to five confirmed fatalities.
One fisherman miraculously survived and is reported to be in stable condition.
Ayub was laid to rest on Sunday, while Zeeshan’s body is expected to arrive by Monday night.
Mehran Ali Shah, Chairman of the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF), mourned the loss and spoke passionately about the plight of fishermen.
“These communities brave dangerous conditions to provide for their families, yet face hunger and poverty when unable to fish,” Shah said, criticizing the lack of safety measures and government support.
He demanded urgent action to enhance maritime safety and provide immediate relief to the affected families.
