Spanish court acquits Shakira of tax fraud, orders €60m reimbursement

A Spanish court has acquitted Colombian pop star Shakira of tax fraud charges linked to her 2011 income, ordering Spanish authorities to reimburse more than €60 million ($70 million), including interest. The ruling marks a major legal victory for the singer after years of disputes with Spain’s tax agency.

Spain’s High Court ruled that prosecutors failed to prove Shakira was officially a tax resident in Spain during 2011 because she did not spend the legally required 183 days in the country that year. The court overturned a previous €55 million fine imposed in 2021 and ordered the repayment of taxes and penalties collected from the singer.

In a statement released through her legal team, Shakira said there was “never any fraud” and described the case as an exhausting eight-year ordeal that harmed her reputation, health, and family life. Her lawyer also criticised what he called the Spanish tax authorities’ flawed administrative practices.

The case is separate from another tax dispute in which Shakira reached a settlement with prosecutors in 2023 regarding taxes from 2012 to 2014. Spanish tax authorities are expected to appeal the latest ruling to the Supreme Court.
