The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has sounded the alarm for Karachi and Hyderabad, warning of heavy rainfall from August 24 to 28 that could spark urban flooding, power outages, and widespread disruptions. As the monsoon season intensifies, authorities urge residents to prepare immediately to ensure safety.
The NDMA’s advisory, released on August 22, 2025, predicts intense rainfall across Karachi and Hyderabad from Sunday, August 24, through August 28, accompanied by thunder and lightning. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirms that a new monsoon system will sweep into Sindh on August 27, extending rainfall through August 30. This follows a deadly monsoon spell earlier this month that claimed 17 lives in Karachi, submerging roads and homes.
Moreover, Karachi’s already strained drainage system faces significant risks, as it struggles to manage rainfall exceeding 40 mm. Recent rains saw areas like Gulshan-e-Hadeed record 178 mm, causing chaos on major roads like Shahrah-e-Faisal and Jahangir Road.
The NDMA calls on residents to act swiftly to minimize risks. Avoid flooded roads, steer clear of electric poles, and handle appliances cautiously to prevent electrocution, a leading cause of recent fatalities.Additionally, those in low-lying areas should prepare emergency kits with food, water, flashlights, and first aid supplies. Furthermore, clearing drainage systems around homes is critical to reduce water buildup.
