The Sindh government has decided to introduce significant amendments to its Motor Vehicle Laws, with a key proposal to make drug testing for drivers a mandatory part of the legislation. The proposed amendments stipulate that drivers testing positive for drug use will face legal action, with cases registered against them. A draft of these amendments to the Motor Vehicle Laws is slated to be presented before the Sindh Cabinet for thorough deliberation and final approval.
The proposed changes also include stricter penalties for traffic violations. Specifically, the draft suggests the registration of cases against individuals involved in one-wheeling, with potential punishment upon conviction. Furthermore, the amendments propose hefty fines for heavy vehicle owners who fail to install cameras in their vehicles, with penalties potentially reaching up to PKR 100,000. In an effort to curb traffic violations by motorcyclists, the Sindh government is considering a minimum fine of PKR 5,000 for various offenses. The draft also proposes substantial fines, potentially up to PKR 100,000, for driving on the wrong way and other traffic infringements. These proposed amendments signal the Sindh government’s commitment to enhancing road safety and enforcing stricter adherence to traffic regulations across the province.
