Cameroon: World’s Oldest Head of State Paul Biya Wins Another Term

Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya has secured a record eighth consecutive term in office, making him the world’s oldest head of state still in power.

According to official results, Biya won 53.66 percent of the vote in the October 12 election, defeating his former ally Issa Cheruma Bakari, who received 35.19 percent.

The election period was marred by unrest, as clashes between opposition supporters and security forces erupted across several cities, including the commercial hub of Douala, where at least four people were killed.

Analysts warn that political tensions in the country may intensify following the results, as opposition parties allege irregularities and voter suppression.

Paul Biya has ruled Cameroon since 1982, making him one of the world’s longest-serving leaders. He became the nation’s second president after its independence from France in 1960. Biya abolished presidential term limits in 2008 through a constitutional amendment and controversially secured another victory in 2018 with over 71 percent of the vote.
