Flash Flood Warning Issued for Kabul River on Jan 22–23 After Rain, Snowfall Forecast

The Federal Flood Commission (FFC) has issued a flash flood warning for the Kabul River and its tributaries for January 22 and 23, 2026, following a forecast of moderate to heavy rainfall and snowfall in Pakistan’s upper regions due to a strong western weather system expected from the evening of January 21 through January 24. The alert specifically warns that rising water levels in the Kabul River, fed by rainfall and snowmelt in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Kashmir, could trigger dangerous flash flooding in low-lying areas.

The FFC urged Provincial Disaster Management Authorities, district governments and irrigation departments to remain on high alert, take precautionary measures and protect lives, property and flood infrastructure. According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, flash floods can form within hours of heavy rain, posing a swift and severe risk to communities near rivers and tributaries.
