PMD Says Volcanic Ash From Ethiopian Eruption Unlikely to Hit Southern Pakistan

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has reassured the public that ash from a rare eruption of Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi volcano is not expected to significantly affect coastal areas like Karachi.

The volcano, located in Ethiopia’s Afar region, sent smoke and ash plumes as high as 14 km into the sky. PMD spokesperson Anjum Nazeer Zaighum explained the ash cloud is projected to drift mostly over the deep Arabian Sea and Oman, flying at altitudes around 50,000 feet—well above ground level. The Met Office also issued its first-ever volcanic ash advisory to aviation, citing engine risks for high-flying aircraft.

According to him, Pakistan’s atmosphere is now “almost clear.”
