Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani welcomed Senator Raja Nasir Abbas Jafri, Chairman of Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) Pakistan, in Baghdad on Saturday, August 23, 2025, to discuss deepening bilateral relations between Iraq and Pakistan. This high-level meeting focused on strengthening religious, cultural, and parliamentary ties while addressing regional peace and support for Pakistani pilgrims.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani emphasized strenghtening the unity between the two countries, citing deep historical and religious bonds. He highlighted the shared cultural heritage and the need to bolster cooperation in parliamentary and diplomatic spheres. Furthermore, he stressed the urgency of Islamic countries adopting a unified stance to promote regional peace, particularly to address the ongoing suffering in Gaza, where civilians endure hunger and violence.
Meanwhile, Senator Raja Nasir Abbas Jafri expressed gratitude for Iraq’s hospitality toward Pakistani pilgrims visiting holy sites, particularly during Arbaeen, which attracts nearly 700,000 Pakistanis annually. Additionally, he praised Iraq’s efforts to facilitate these visits and called for expanding friendly ties, describing it as a “pressing need of the time.” Jafri highlighted the importance of streamlined visa processes and improved airport facilities, building on discussions from his 2024 meeting with former Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi. He also drew attention to the worsening situation in Gilgit-Baltistan, urging collaborative efforts to address regional challenges.
