Sindh Minister for Energy, Planning, and Development, Nasir Hussain Shah, met with President Asif Ali Zardari at the President’s House to discuss pressing energy issues facing the province.
During the meeting, Shah provided a detailed briefing on the challenges hindering Sindh’s energy sector, emphasizing the lack of provincial representation in key national energy organizations, such as the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) and other power distribution entities, which has led to the neglect of Sindh’s interests in critical decision-making processes.
Shah stressed the need for greater provincial representation in K-Electric, the company responsible for Karachi’s power supply, to effectively address public grievances and improve service delivery. He also informed the President about the establishment of the Sindh Electric Power Regulatory Authority (SEPRA), a provincial regulatory body aimed at implementing the principle of “own electricity, own tariff.” According to Shah, SEPRA’s formation is a strategic move to alleviate the burden of expensive electricity on Sindh’s residents and enhance the province’s energy autonomy.
President Zardari, in response, highlighted Sindh’s pivotal role as an energy hub, stating that the province’s progress is integral to Pakistan’s overall development. He assured the minister that Sindh’s energy challenges would be addressed promptly and that all legitimate concerns would be resolved through coordinated efforts.
