BDS Movement Renews Boycott Call Against Marvel and Disney in Support of Palestine

The Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement is reminding supporters to continue boycotting Disney and Marvel over their portrayal of Israeli characters and what the movement describes as support for Israeli propaganda.

The campaign focuses on Marvel’s character Sabra, also known as Ruth Bat-Seraph, an Israeli superhero introduced in the 1980s. The character appears in Captain America: Brave New World, played by Israeli actor Shira Haas.

BDS, alongside Jewish Voice for Peace and the Movement for Black Lives, has called on consumers to boycott Disney+ subscriptions, Marvel merchandise, and screenings of the film.

The groups argue that changing the character’s background does not address its historical association with Israeli government and military institutions. Marvel had previously announced that it would take a different approach to the character following criticism.

The boycott is part of a wider campaign encouraging consumers to use economic and cultural pressure to support Palestinian rights.

The BDS movement was established in 2005 and promotes boycotts, divestment, and sanctions as non-violent methods of advocacy.
