The government is considering PTA tax relief for overseas Pakistanis

The federal government is considering proposals to provide relief in Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) mobile phone taxes for overseas Pakistanis, following repeated concerns raised by expatriates over high registration costs.

Speaking during a Senate session, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said overseas Pakistanis have consistently highlighted the issue during conventions and official engagements in Pakistan. He acknowledged that imported mobile phones brought from abroad remain operational for only a limited period before services are suspended unless PTA taxes are paid.

The minister noted that tax rates currently vary depending on the smartphone model, with premium devices facing particularly high charges. He said the government is seriously reviewing options to reduce the financial burden on overseas Pakistanis and simplify the process.

The development comes as authorities and parliamentary committees continue discussions on rationalising taxes and duties on imported mobile phones in the upcoming federal budget for 2026-27.

Officials believe that easing PTA taxes could improve convenience for expatriates, encourage legal phone registrations, and support broader digital and economic activity in the country.
