Gas supply was suspended in several parts of Karachi after construction work on the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project damaged a high-pressure gas pipeline near Jail Chowrangi on Saturday evening.

According to the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), a 12-inch diameter high-pressure pipeline was struck during excavation work linked to the ongoing Red Line project. The incident caused immediate disruption of gas supply to multiple localities, including Saddar, Garden, Jamshed Road, PIB Colony, Lyari, Lines Area, and nearby neighbourhoods.
SSGC officials said emergency teams were dispatched to the site soon after the incident. The damaged section of the pipeline was secured with safety barriers to prevent further hazards while repair work began on an emergency basis.
Residents in affected areas reported complete gas outages during peak evening cooking hours, causing inconvenience to households dependent on piped gas. Officials stated that restoration would begin gradually once repair work was completed, with full recovery expected by early Sunday morning.
The incident is the latest in a series of utility disruptions linked to Karachi’s ongoing Red Line BRT construction, where underground infrastructure has repeatedly been affected during excavation activities.
