UK Records Plunging Night-Time Temperatures, Cold Wave Disrupts Travel and Schools

A severe cold wave in the United Kingdom continues to break low-temperature records night after night, with Marham in Norfolk reporting temperatures dropping to around –12.5°C. This extreme cold has significantly disrupted daily life across the UK, including transport and education systems.

Officials say heavy snowfall has forced hundreds of schools to remain closed, extending Christmas holidays for many students. Major roads, rail services, and airline operations have also been affected, causing delays and cancellations that have frustrated travellers trying to return home or continue their journeys.

Authorities report a sharp rise in car breakdowns due to icy conditions, with emergency services stretched, while train routes, including international Eurostar services, are running late or halted because tracks are snowbound.

Airports such as Aberdeen, Inverness, Belfast International, and Liverpool John Lennon have experienced flight cancellations and delays as snow and ice make runways unsafe.
