Pakistan Navy to Induct First Hangor-Class Submarine in 2026

The Pakistan Navy stands on the cusp of a significant enhancement to its underwater fleet. Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of the Naval Staff, announced that the service will induct its first Chinese-designed Hangor-class submarine into active duty next year.

Admiral Ashraf shared these insights during an exclusive interview with China’s Global Times, published on November 2, 2025. He emphasized the submarines’ role in elevating Pakistan’s maritime capabilities.

These diesel-electric attack platforms incorporate air-independent propulsion (AIP) technology, which allows extended submerged operations and superior stealth. Additionally, Pakistan has launched three submarines into the Yangtze River from a Hubei shipyard, and sea trials proceed without hitches.

The deal divides construction responsibilities evenly. China handles the first four submarines, while Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works assembles the remainder. This arrangement fosters technology transfer and nurtures domestic expertise.

Furthermore, Admiral Ashraf praised Chinese systems as reliable and tailored to Pakistan’s needs in anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, and beyond. He noted, “Chinese-origin platforms and equipment have been reliable, technologically advanced and well-suited to the Pakistan Navy’s operational requirements.
