Beijing: China has launched the world’s largest electric river cargo ship, powered entirely by lithium batteries instead of conventional fuels — marking a major step toward sustainable inland water transport.
The newly launched ship, named “Gezuba,” measures 130 meters in length and can carry up to 13,000 tons of cargo. It operates on 12 lithium battery power units that together generate 24,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity.
According to the engineers behind the project, the ship’s batteries are designed for quick replacement, allowing it to cover a maximum range of around 500 kilometers on a single charge.
Equipped with an advanced smart control system, the vessel supports remote navigation and automatic berthing, enhancing both safety and efficiency in operations.
Yin Xinping of the Chinese Academy of Engineering said the launch of the Gezuba represents not only a product innovation but also a comprehensive technological breakthrough. He noted that China has successfully tested key technologies including large-capacity batteries and DC power systems on a commercial scale.
He added that the project integrates multiple cutting-edge systems — including smart engine control, coastal infrastructure, remote piloting, multi-network integration, and ship-to-shore communication — setting a new global benchmark for electric maritime transport.
According to Chinese media, the electric vessel is expected to save approximately 617 tons of fuel annually while reducing carbon emissions by nearly 2,000 tons each year, reinforcing China’s commitment to carbon neutrality and green innovation in the shipping industry.
