Sushila Karki Becomes Nepal’s First Woman PM Via Discord Consensus

Nepal’s political landscape shifted dramatically this week. Young protesters, fueled by frustration over corruption and social media bans, toppled the government of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Moreover, they turned to an unexpected tool—a gaming chat app called Discord—to select an interim leader. On September 12, 2025, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, aged 73, took oath as Nepal’s first female prime minister after an online poll on the platform secured her the top spot. As the country recovers from violent clashes that claimed at least 51 lives, Karki now steers toward elections set for March 5, 2026.

The unrest began earlier in September 2025. Nepal’s government, under Oli, banned 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, in a bid to curb alleged misinformation. Instead, this move backfired spectacularly. Gen Z activists, who make up a significant portion of Nepal’s 30 million population with over half now internet-connected, flooded the streets of Kathmandu and beyond. They demanded an end to rampant corruption, unemployment, and political nepotism. Protesters even set fire to Singha Durbar, the main government administrative building, and damaged airports and a TV station. Consequently, the military stepped in, imposing a nationwide curfew and assuming control of the capital after Oli and four ministers resigned on September 9, 2025. Yet, amid the chaos, these young demonstrators found a workaround: Discord.

“Youth Against Corruption”

Discord, originally designed for gamers to communicate during online sessions, proved ideal for coordination. Protesters created a server called “Youth Against Corruption,” which ballooned to over 145,000 members in just four days. The platform’s features—voice chats, text channels, and polls—allowed seamless organization.

For instance, dedicated channels handled announcements, fact-checks, ground updates, emergency helplines, and general discussions. As Shaswot Lamichhane, a high school graduate and channel moderator, explained, the group aimed to simulate a “mini-election” for an interim leader. Therefore, they avoided traditional politics and focused on suggesting a neutral figure acceptable to both protesters and the military. Army chiefs even met with server organizers, tasking them with proposing a candidate.

Deliberations unfolded rapidly and chaotically. Users debated several names, including cricketer Sagar Dhakal, former electricity chief Kul Man Ghising, influencer Rastra Bimochan Timilsina, Dharan mayor Harka Sampang, and tech innovator Mahabir Pun. Multiple polls narrowed the field. Eventually, Sushila Karki emerged as the frontrunner due to her reputation for integrity during her tenure as Nepal’s first female Chief Justice from 2015 to 2016. In one key poll, she garnered over 50% of more than 7,713 votes cast.

Thus, organizers forwarded her name to President Ram Chandra Poudel and Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel. Karki met with them shortly after, securing approval. On September 12, 2025, she was sworn in, becoming the first woman to lead Nepal and etching history as the world’s first leader chosen via a Discord vote.
