PTI Leaders Including Yasmin Rashid and Ijaz Chaudhry Sentenced to 10 Years’ Imprisonment

An Anti-Terrorism Court has handed down 10-year prison sentences to four senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including Dr Yasmin Rashid, Ijaz Chaudhry, and former Punjab Governor Umar Sarfraz Cheema, in connection with multiple May 9 cases involving violence and property damage.

The verdict, delivered by ATC Judge Arshad Javed at Kot Lakhpat Jail, relates to incidents such as vehicle burning in Gulberg, Lahore, and container arson at Kalma Chowk during the May 9 riots. The court also acquitted five other defendants in some of the cases.

In total, several individuals received the 10-year sentence, while others are still listed as absconders. Opposition leaders have reacted strongly, with calls for democratic dialogue and unity. The legal decisions add fresh intensity to ongoing political tensions surrounding accountability for the widespread May 9 unrest across Punjab.
