Pakistan Rejects Reuters Report on Makkah Defence Pact as ‘Speculative’

Pakistan’s Information Ministry has rejected a Reuters report about the Makkah defence pact, describing parts of the report as speculative and saying it should not be treated as an official interpretation of the agreement.

The ministry said the defence agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia should be understood according to its actual text and the statements issued by both countries.

The pact, signed during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Saudi Arabia, has been described by Islamabad and Riyadh as a framework for strengthening bilateral defence and security cooperation.

The Information Ministry said interpretations suggesting specific commitments beyond what is contained in the agreement were speculative.

Reuters had reported on discussions and possible implications surrounding the pact, including questions about how the agreement could apply in different security scenarios.

Pakistan’s government has maintained that the agreement reflects the longstanding strategic relationship between the two countries and their commitment to mutual security.

The ministry urged media outlets and commentators to rely on official statements and the text of the agreement when reporting on its scope and implications.

The clarification comes as regional security arrangements receive increased attention amid continuing tensions in the Middle East.
