FO says Chinese FM’s remarks on Iran conflict were misrepresented in media reports

Pakistan’s Foreign Office has clarified that remarks made by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a phone conversation with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar were misrepresented by sections of the media. The FO stressed that the discussion took place in a cordial atmosphere and focused on regional peace efforts.

According to the FO, some reports incorrectly portrayed Wang Yi’s comments regarding Pakistan’s mediation role in the ongoing US-Iran tensions. Officials said the Chinese foreign minister appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts and expressed support for initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and restoring stability in the region.

The clarification came after several international reports suggested that China had urged Pakistan to intensify mediation efforts between Iran and the United States and help address issues related to reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office maintained that the conversation between the two diplomats reflected the longstanding strategic partnership between Islamabad and Beijing, with both sides discussing regional developments, bilateral cooperation, and the importance of maintaining a durable ceasefire.

The FO added that Pakistan remains committed to promoting dialogue and diplomacy in the region while continuing close coordination with China on matters of mutual interest.
