Opposition leaders have accused the government of undermining civil liberties and democratic rights in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), calling for an immediate end to what they described as “state repression” in the region. The allegations were made during a joint press conference in Islamabad by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Salman Akram Raja and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) Chairman Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.

The opposition leaders claimed that constitutional governance, freedom of expression, and the sanctity of the vote were under threat in AJK. They alleged that the situation on the ground was not being fully reflected by state-run media and urged authorities to respect democratic principles and fundamental rights.

Salman Akram Raja alleged that the region was facing a serious crisis and claimed that public rights had steadily eroded over the past four years. He also criticised the continued imprisonment of former prime minister Imran Khan, alleging that the legal process against him was unjust. Raja called on the government to end what he termed coercive measures and uphold constitutional and legal norms.

Addressing the media, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas said every state must function in accordance with its constitution and the rule of law. He condemned the alleged use of force against protesters and urged authorities to resolve political differences through dialogue rather than confrontation.

The latest statements come amid heightened political tensions in AJK following recent unrest and elections, with opposition parties continuing to demand greater transparency, accountability, and protection of democratic freedoms in the region.
