Punjab braces for extreme heat as temperatures may soar to 52°C

Punjab is expected to face an intense heatwave in the coming weeks, with temperatures in some areas likely to climb as high as 52°C, according to weather authorities. Officials have issued warnings as rising temperatures threaten to create extreme conditions across the province.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has indicated that temperatures will remain significantly above normal, particularly in southern and central Punjab. In many areas, mercury is already projected to stay several degrees higher than seasonal averages, with the heat expected to intensify further in May and June.

Authorities fear that such extreme temperatures could lead to serious health risks, including heatstroke and dehydration, especially among vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and outdoor workers. Hospitals and emergency services have been put on alert to handle potential heat-related cases.

Urban centres are likely to feel even hotter due to the “urban heat island” effect, where concrete structures and pollution trap heat, pushing temperatures beyond recorded levels.

Officials have advised citizens to take precautionary measures, including avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, staying hydrated, and limiting outdoor activities. The looming heatwave highlights growing concerns over climate extremes and their impact on daily life in Pakistan.
