Karachi dealers promise recovery of stolen phones with new tracking system

President of the Karachi Electronics Dealers Association, Rizwan Irfan, has announced a new initiative aimed at tackling mobile phone theft in the city. He urged citizens from across the province to report stolen phones to the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), assuring them that the association would help recover devices if they surfaced in local markets.

Speaking at a press conference, Irfan revealed that over the past four months, dealers have successfully recovered 265 stolen mobile phones worth more than Rs5.8 million. He said these efforts demonstrate the growing role of market stakeholders in supporting law enforcement and protecting consumers.

To further strengthen this system, the association is introducing a new verification mechanism for mobile phone sellers. Under this plan, anyone attempting to sell a phone in the market will be required to provide biometric verification through thumb impressions, along with a photograph.

If the system detects a criminal record linked to the individual, the information will be instantly forwarded to the Inspector General’s office. Authorities will then dispatch a team to take immediate action.

The initiative is expected to deter illegal sales and improve the recovery rate of stolen devices across Karachi.
