Daesh-Khorasan Spokesman Sultan Aziz Azzam Arrested, UN Report Says

A United Nations Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team report reveals that Daesh-Khorasan’s spokesman, Sultan Aziz Azzam, has been captured, marking a significant blow to the militant group’s propaganda and recruitment activities.

According to the UN monitoring document, Azzam was arrested on May 16, 2025, in a counter-terrorism operation carried out by Pakistani intelligence. His detention has weakened the organisation’s media wing and helped disrupt several planned attacks, the report says.

The Al-Azzam Foundation—believed to be central to Daesh-Khorasan’s recruitment and online propaganda efforts—has become largely inactive since his arrest. Senior commanders and ideological leaders of the network have also been “neutralized,” significantly degrading its operational capabilities, the UN report adds.

International analysts consider the arrest a key achievement in counter-terrorism cooperation and regional security efforts.
