The Importance of Handwashing for a Healthier Future

This is quite alarming that only 34% of the population worldwide washes hands using a soap. People here are not aware of basic hygiene, which leads to many diseases. Well, provided the literacy rate which is also low in Pakistan, this could be expected. However, on a global scale, in a modern world and most importantly after COVID-19, when importance of washing hands was promoted in both rural and urban areas, it is quite shocking that campaigns failed to make a significant difference.

Handwashing may seem like a simple habit, but it plays a powerful role in protecting our health.

According to recent findings, only 34% of people worldwide wash their hands with soap, and in Pakistan, the percentage is the same.

In its global hygiene report, UNICEF highlights that only around one in three people worldwide have the habit of washing hands with soap after using the toilet.

It is a small act but a crucial one and the first step to hygiene. If done properly, it can prevent the spread of dangerous illnesses like Rotavirus, Influenza, and Hepatitis A.

Germs often stay on our hands after touching surfaces, playing, or even using a mobile phone. Without washing hands, these germs easily enter our bodies when we eat or touch our face.

Teaching children and adults the correct method of handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds can save countless lives.

On International Handwashing Day, let’s pledge to spread awareness for people to adopt this simple action into a daily routine. Clean hands don’t just protect individuals, they help build healthier and safer communities for everyone.
